The Basics of Hippotherapy

Hippotherapy literally means “treatment with the help of a horse”. In hippotherapy, the horse influences the child rather than the child controlling the horse. The child is positioned on the horse and actively responds to the movement. Benefits of hippotherapy include:

  • Increased abdominal tone and postural control for breath support,
  • Increased coordination,
  • Increased sensory motor function,
  • Increased limbic system function related to arousal, motivation and attention.
